How can I access databases and journals at UNC?
On-Campus Access
Electronic journals, databases and books are accessible from on-campus computers that are connected to the UNC network. In most cases, no login is required when using a UNC networked computer to access library resources.
Most library computers require a UNC-CH Onyen login. Visitors can use the computers located in front of the elevators on the first floor of the Health Sciences Library by obtaining a guest pass from the User Services Desk.
Create or manage your Onyen through Onyen Services.
Off-Campus Access
UNC students, faculty and staff, and UNC Hospital staff must use an Onyen login to access online journals, databases and books from off-campus.
UNC Hospitals Access
UNC Hospital staff and UNC students, faculty and staff must use an Onyen login to access online journals, databases and books when in UNC Hospitals. Having problems connecting from the hospital? Contact Ask a Librarian.
AHEC Users
AHEC users affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill must use an AHEC Digital Library (ADL) account to log in to library resources. ADL password trouble? Contact your librarian.
Members of the Public
Members of the public have several options to access the UNC Libraries. Please see the Alumni Services page for information specific to alumni access. Below is general information for non-affiliate access:
- In-Library Use: State college/university libraries provide resources to any member of the public. At UNC, anyone is welcome to use library resources when we are open. Most of our electronic resources are available for use at one of several public terminals on the first floor of the library. Ask for a log in code at the main desk on the first floor.
- AHEC Digital Library: Friends of the Health Sciences Library at a certain donation level can gain access to the AHEC Digital Library. ADL membership does not provide access to UNC online resources. For more information, please email ADL-Questions@listserv.unc.edu or call 919-966-0946. Before enrolling in the ADL, review this list of resources to be sure ADL membership will meet your needs.
- Request a Copy: Book chapters and journal articles in volumes owned by the Health Sciences Library may be ordered and delivered to your desktop. Fees start at $8 for individual and non-profit users.
- NC Health Info: NC Health Info is an online guide to web sites of quality health and medical information and local health services throughout North Carolina. Links on NC Health Info are selected and maintained by North Carolina librarians.
- NC Live: NC Live is a service offered state-wide through local public, community college, or academic libraries. It is an online library of e-books, magazines, newspapers, journals, media, and databases, accessible via library websites and www.nclive.org. Topics covered in the resources range from careers, business, and investing, to auto repair, health, history, and genealogy. Passwords are available to individual borrowers at NC public libraries. If you are physically located at one of the 200 member libraries across the state, then you will not need a password to access the resources. If, however, you would like to access the NC Live resources from home, you will need talk to your local public library to see if you are eligible for an account.
- Additionally, if you have adjunct faculty or preceptor status with UNC, you may be eligible for access to UNC's resources.
